Make it easy on yourself: transitioning from cigarettes to e-cigs

Posted

Are you a cigarette smoker? If so, you’ve probably had someone try to convince you to switch to e-cigarettes instead. There are plenty of good reasons to do so. Vaping is cheaper than smoking, e-cigarettes have far fewer adverse health effects than traditional combustible cigarettes, and — let’s be honest here — e-cigs don’t stink the way cigarettes do.

E-cigs are a safer alternative to smoking traditional cigarettes, 95 percent safer to be exact, according to the Royal College of Physician’s report titled ‘Nicotine Without Smoke’. Not only is vaping a safer and more superior nicotine delivery method, it also allows ex-smokers to maintain the social and ritualistic aspects of smoking, all with no ash, no tar, no smoke, no smell, and no stained teeth. Regardless of your reason for switching to e-cigarettes, the tips that follow below will help ease your transition.

Get your nicotine level correct

Traditional cigarettes are pretty straightforward in terms of nicotine concentration: you’ve got regulars, and you’ve got lights. E-cigarettes are different. Many e-juices come in different nicotine concentrations; say, from 0 mg to 24 mg. To decipher the nicotine levels in e-liquids, look at the milligrams (mg/mL) of nicotine indicated on the packaging. For example, if you want to know what 20 mg/mL means, it means that there is 20mg of nicotine per millilitre of e-liquid. Alternatively, the nicotine concentrations can also be expressed as a percentage. For instance, instead of 20mg/mL, you may see 2.0%.

To be clear, though, if you start with 0 mg, your switch to e-cigarettes might not be as successful as you want. After all, going cold turkey on nicotine is no easy task for even the most dedicated of quitters. Instead, find a nicotine level that meets your fix and, if no longer consuming nicotine is something in which you’re interested, gradually lower the nicotine concentration.

Choosing the right kit

One thing that makes e-cigarettes popular is the ability to fine-tune and personalize your vapor delivery device. While there are definitely some elaborate custom mods out there, we recommend you start your e-cigarette journey with something simple and straightforward. An electronic cigarette works by vaporizing the e-liquid containing nicotine into an aerosol mist that the vaper inhales. It is sleek, inconspicuous, and excellent at mimicking the act of smoking a cigarette while providing you with a satisfying experience. So, purchase a standard starter kit with a rechargeable e-cigarette to ensure that your switch to e-cigarettes is successful. And on the topic of recharging…

Don’t forget to charge your device

The rechargeability and easy to refill nature of e-cigarettes are two features that make them great. Take advantage of that. Make sure your device is fully charged when you leave the house. Similarly, ensure that you restock on e cig liquid before you run out. If you fail to do either of these things, you’re more likely to find yourself in a situation where you can’t vape and give into buying a pack of smokes.

Find your preferred flavour

One of the nice things about e-cigarettes is the seemingly limitless number of varieties of e-juice. Explore the myriad options available to you and find a blend that’s up your alley. Maybe you’ll find that you enjoy a more traditional tobacco flavour, but maybe one of a candy, dessert or fruit e-juice will be more to your liking. Try a few options and see what suits you.
